FAQ

Are you social distancing?

Yes.  All communication will be by phone or online only

How much would it take to get started?

Depending on the services, you could get started for as low as $20.  Some parents simply need a professional opinion for the best approach to learning online.  In those cases, you can get my assistance for as low as $20.  However, there are other parents that may need to request extensive testing and frequent consultations concerning their child’s literacy needs.  That type of assistance will cost a little more because of the preparation that is required before and after each session.  If in doubt, feel free to contact me and ask more questions.

Why Should I Consider a Reading Literacy Consultant/Specialist?

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, “In 2015, roughly 2 out of 3 fourth graders failed to score proficient in reading. The percentages of non-proficient readers are even higher when looking at specific racial/ethnic groups: 82 percent of African-American fourth-graders were reading below proficiency, along with 79 and 78 percent of Latino and American-Indian students respectively.” When students are not reading proficiently, they do not have an understanding of the material and this could cause major problems.

In some cases, there has been an honest effort to solve the problem.  Teachers have already conducted interventions, parents have already spent countless hours helping with homework, or a tutor may have worked with the child one-on-one.  Even though it seems like everything that could possibly be done has already been done, the child is still struggling.  You may notice that the child cannot comprehend simple text, has trouble sounding out words, or has not made any progress with their reading level.  If any of this sounds familiar, you may want to reach out to a Reading Literacy Consultant/Specialist like me.

Can it Make a Difference?

Absolutely!  Imagine sitting in your home and hearing your neighbor unsuccessfully attempting to crank his car.  After several attempts, he goes to the store and purchases a battery.  After properly replacing his old battery with the new one, his car starts.  A few days later, your car does not start.  Without checking anything under the hood, you go to the store and purchase a new battery.  There is a chance that it could work but it is highly unlikely. Since you never diagnosed the problem, you were merely taking an uneducated guess.

In many cases, that is the way reading is treated today.  Whenever a child struggles in reading, people tend to automatically put them on a generic plan that may have worked for someone else.  This will only work if the plan matches the child’s specific needs, but it would be far better to assess the child, diagnose the problem, and come up with an individualized solution or plan.

Do You Offer Tutoring Services?

Yes and No.  I WILL provide direct instruction for your child, based on his/her individual needs.  This is why the assessment process is extremely important.  However, I do NOT help with general homework, assignments, etc.  My goal is to help students become successful, independent readers, not to simply help students complete assignments.  I also assist parents or guardians with their approach to solving their child’s reading struggles.   Once the specific reading problems have been identified, I provide recommendations and guidance to resolve them.

How Do I Get Started?

Please reach out to me by using the “Contact Me” form.  I will give you a free consultation to determine if my services would be right for you.  At that point, you may request a regular consultation or assessment.  The assessment is $65 and will help identify your child’s strengths and weaknesses as a reader.  After the assessment, I will review the data (which takes a considerable amount of time) and schedule a follow up consultation with you concerning your child’s results (already included in the price).  This follow up session will take place within a week.  During that consultation, you will receive strategies and suggestions that will get your child on the right path to reading success.  The goal is for you to know your child’s reading level and their area of need, so that all effort will lead to their becoming a better reader.

There are several options for scheduling your sessions.  You may choose to schedule my services weekly, twice a week, every two weeks or monthly.  Your child will be able to progress at his or her own pace.  As he/she masters various skills and meets specific reading goals, your child will be able to move on to higher reading levels and/or new reading goals.  The amount of time and frequency for consultations with me is entirely up to you.  I look forward to hearing from you soon!
